by on April 17, 2017

LG OLED C7 is a part of LG’s 2017 4K OLED TV lineup. Unlike the predecessor OLED C6 that comes with curved panel, it comes with flat panel. In the market, it is available on 2 screen sizes, 55 Inch (OLED55C7P) and 65 Inch (OLED65C7P). Meanwhile, LG OLED B6 is a part and at once the lowest model of LG’s 2016 4K OLED TV lineup and also comes with flat panel. In the market, it is also available on 2 screen sizes only, 55 Inch (OLED55B6P) and 65 Inch (OLED65B6P). The major downside of both, they are not equipped with 3D technology. Nevertheless, as OLED TVs where black level and contrast is as the major advantage, both of them equally offer absolute amazing picture quality. So, what are the difference between them and which is a better choice? Let’s start to discuss a lot about their difference.

Short Review of LG OLED B6 (OLED55B6P, OLED65B6P)

LG OLED B6 Review

Comes with HDR technology, LG OLED B6 already supports both of most popular HDR format, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision and HDR performance that offered is really great. And of course, this cannot be separated from great performance of visual specs that offered by LG OLED B6 series.

One of the superiority of OLED B6 where there is no LED TV can achieve is about its perfect black level and infinite contrast. This is due it has self lighting pixel where each of pixel can switch on/off/dimmed individually without being affected by the condition of other pixel surrounding. This makes black level reached by OLED B6 is close to 0 nits with native contrast ratio is infinite. Since black level and contrast is one of the most important aspects of picture quality, of course this makes the picture that produced looks very amazing. Nevertheless, not only black level and contrast that becomes major advantage of OLED TV, some aspects of picture quality that offered by LG OLED B6 are also very strong. With 4 color sub-pixel technology where in addition to standard RGB sub-pixel, there is also white sub-pixel, this allows it can deliver wide color gamut. The result, color of the picture displayed on the screen of OLED B6 series looks very accurate, even when displaying both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision videos. Additionally, for improving peak brightness, LG OLED B6 is powered by Ultra Luminance technology that makes the picture produced looks very bright for OLED TV. Peak brightness of OLED might not as bright as what reached by top model LED TV, but it is still brighter than 550 nits as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR10 video fully. As we know, UHD alliance set different standardization for OLED TV and LED TV about peak brightness that must reached for displaying HDR 10 video fully.

In addition to an absolute amazing picture quality, LG OLED B6 also offer great performance of some features that offered. Pixel response time is very quick that makes it offer excellent performance when handling motion blur. Its side viewing angle is also perfect.  Additionally, it also powered by great performance UHD Up-scaling engine that allows you to enjoy every contents with the quality close to 4K quality. The other interesting thing that offered is about Tizen OS as its smart TV platform that offers attractive and responsive smart TV experience. But unfortunately, its input lag is average that makes play games on OLED B6 series is not as comfortable as on Samsung KS series. For fast paced games, this will be a little disappointing.

Short Review of LG OLED C7 (OLED55C7P, OLED65C7P)

LG OLED C7 Review

As we have mentioned, LG OLED C7 is part of LG’s 2017 OLED TV lineup. Unlike the predecessor C6 series that comes with curved panel, OLED C7 comes with flat panel. Comes with HDR, it already support more complete HDR format including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, HLG by BBC and NHK, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor. Additionally, OLED C7 is equipped with new feature called HDR effect that improves color vibrancy, saturation, and brightness range of SDR images as close as possible to HDR quality. This technology is also designed for optimizing the picture scene-by-scene so HDR picture that produced look more amazing.

Like other model of LG OLED TV, perfect black level and infinite contrast is the major advantages of LG OLED C7 series. Like B6 series, Samsung OLED C7 also has pixel dimming where it didn’t require backlight. It is similar to Full Array Local Dimming on LED TV with the number of dimming zones is equal to the number of pixel. The result, black looks absolute black that makes detail of images in dark scenes looks very clear even when in a dark room. Meanwhile, with Ultra Luminance technology behind it, this also makes the picture produced by LG OLED C7 looks very bright for OLED TV, even brighter than B6 series. Since peak brightness is one of the most important aspects of HDR, this certainly also makes its HDR performance is great. Meanwhile, color of the picture displayed on the screen of OLED C7 is also look very accurate and vibrant, no matter it is displaying SDR or HDR contents. This is due LG OLED C7 also can cover wide color gamut, more than 90% of DCI P3 as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 video fully. With great performance on all aspect of picture quality, of course this makes the picture displayed on the screen of OLED C7 looks very amazing, no matter it is used in a dark room or a bright room with normal light. Nevertheless, you should avoid to use OLED C7 in a very bright room with sunlight coming in through the window due its peak brightness is still below 1000 nits and not bright enough to fight the glare.

Like OLED B6 series, LG OLED C7 also has perfect side viewing angle. This means the quality of the picture will look consistently amazing even when you are watching TV from side viewing angle. Additionally, perfect motion handling also allow you to enjoy fast moving images like sports clearly and smoothly with almost no motion blur. The major difference between LG OLED C7 and OLED B6 is about their HDR ability. Started from HDR format that supported by them, OLED C7 support most of HDR format that available in the market including HDR 10 by UHD Alliance, Dolby Vision by Dolby Laboratories, HLG by NHK and BBC, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor while LG OLED B6 only supports HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. Still about HDR ability, LG OLED C7 also comes with new feature called HDR Effect that allows you to enjoy normal contents with the quality close to HDR.

The other difference but not major is about Component In where LG OLED B6 is equipped with this input while OLED C7 is not equipped.  Meanwhile, they also have a difference in sound equipment where OLED B6 is equipped with 4.0 speaker channel with 40 watts total sound output while OLED C7 is equipped with 2.0 speaker channel also with 40 watts total sound output. Still about audio performance, sound system of OLED B6 is designed by HarmanKardon while OLED C7 is not, but it already supports Dolby Atmos by Dolby Laboratories. The result, sound quality of OLED B6 might be better than OLED C7, but for you who care about sound quality, the addition external sound bar is still recommended for both.

LG OLED C7 vs LG OLED B6 Performance

Picture Quality

Talking about picture quality, both of them actually offer similar performance. Is there is a difference, it is not too significant and don’t have a big impact on their picture quality. The main key of amazing picture quality that produced by LG OLED B6 and OLED C7 is about its perfect black level and infinite contrast ratio. This makes the black of images look absolute blacks even when used in a dark room. The result, details of images in a dark scene can be revealed more so looks very clear, especially when displaying HDR content that indeed is designed for revealing details images in shadow or dark scenes. Essentially, black level and contrast is the superiority of OLED TV including OLED B6 and OLED C7 where there is no LED TV can achieve. Additionally, perfect black level also makes the color looks consistently saturated in a dark scene.

Meanwhile, although not as bright as premium LED TV like Sony X930E or Z9D, peak brightness of LG OLED C7 and OLED B6 is also bright enough to makes its HDR performance is great and certified by Ultra HD Premium Certification by UHD alliance. Additionally, the picture produced is also quite bright to drown out the glare so the picture still looks consistently amazing when used in a bright room. Nevertheless, it is not for using in an extremely bright room with a lot of lights coming in directly through the window or at the outdoor because its peak brightness is not quite bright for that. However, despite peak brightness reached by OLED B6 and OLED C7 is still below 1000 nits, at least it is brighter than 550 nits as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 contents fully that have been set for OLED TV. Meanwhile, compared between them, picture produced by LG OLED C7 is light brighter than LG OLED B6, no matter they are inputted by SDR or HDR signals that course makes OLED C7 is slight better when used in a bright room.

Moving on color performance, they also offer similar performance. Color of the picture that displayed on each of their screen looks really accurate. This is due both of them can cover wide color gamut or more precisely both of them can cover about 95% of DCI P3 color space. Since it is more than 90% of DCI P3 color space as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 video fully, color of the picture that displayed certainly look very saturated, especially when inputted by HDR 10. Meanwhile, for displaying SDR contents that only require Rec.709 color space, what delivered by OLED B6 and OLED C7 certainly is more than enough. Still about color performance, both of them also already support 10 bit depth of color that means the can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color. The impact, color gradient of the picture that produced looks very smooth. In darker color, color banding is indeed still be slight noticeable, but for most people, this should not be a problem.

While picture quality produced by LG OLED C7 and OLED B6 is absolutely amazing due its perfect black level, bright peak brightness, wide color gamut, and smooth color gradient, both of them also equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine called Tru 4K Up-Scaler engine that allows you to enjoy every content with the quality close to 4K quality. This means, no matter the resolution of your video source, even for lower resolution like DVDs movies with 480p resolution, the final image in 4K that produced looks very clear and sharp. And of course, the high resolution of video source, the final image in 4K resolution that produced look clearer and sharper with small detail preserved more.

The other great performance that offered by LG OLED B6 and OLED C7 is about wide viewing angle. Unlike LED TV particularly that used VA panel where the picture will look to deteriorate when the viewers watch TV from side viewing angle, no matter the angle you are watching from, the quality of the picture looks more consistent, even when from extremely side viewing angle. Even it is far better than LED TV with IPS panel. Of course this will facilitate you to get the best viewing when are setting your seat and TV in your room.

Motion Handling and 24p Playback

The perfect performance is also offered by LG OLED C7 and OLED B6 when they are displaying fast moving images like sports program or fast movies. Their pixel responsive time is very fast where there is no LCD TV can reach. The result, fast moving images displayed looks very clear and smooth with almost no motion blur noticeable. While both of LG OLED B6 and OLED C7 equally offer perfect motion handling, when playing 24p movies, OLED C7 offer better performance, especially when inputted by 24p movies via 60i or 60p signals. This means when playing 24p movies from Blu-Ray, both of them equally offer smooth picture quality with judder-free. Meanwhile, when displaying 24p movies via 60p/60i signals like movies from Streaming Media or Satellite TV, they offer different performance. OLED C7 still offers judder-free while OLED B6 cannot completely remove the judder.

Inputs/Outputs

The excepting of Component In, both of them are equipped with identical connectivity. There are 4 HDMI ports support HDCP 2.2, Audio Return Channel, CEC, and more, 3 USB Ports, 1 AV In, 1 Ethernet, 1 RF In (Terrestrial), optical, and RS 232. About Component In, LG OLED C7 is not equipped with this input while OLED B6 is equipped with this input. Meanwhile, talking about input lag, LG OLED C7 series offer far lower input lag than OLED B6 at any source. This means when used for playing games especially fast paced games that require fast reflexes, OLED C7 is more comfortable to use than OLED B6. Playing fast paced games on OLED C7 feel very responsive. While the input lag of OLED B6 is too high for fast paced games. The input lag of OLED C7 even is competitive with Samsung KS series from last year.

Smart TV

Essentially, both of them feature similar smart TV platform called WebOS. The difference is about their version where LG OLED B6 comes with 3.0 version while OLED C7 comes with 3.5 version. And as a newer model, of course there are some upgrades and updates that make WebOS 3.5 is slight better than WebOS 3.0. But even so, their performance is similar. User interface and layout is designed very attractive but simple so make the navigation is easy. Additionally, performance is also very fast and responsive. Once an app is launched, the loading in time is very fast. As well as selecting between different apps or multitasking, this also feels very responsive. Meanwhile talking about apps provided, there are a lot of interesting apps provided. There are most popular apps like Amazon Videos, YouTube, Netflix, and more, Web Browser, LG Contents store that provide tons of apps and games, and many more. And with built-in high speed Wi-Fi 802.11 ac behind them, video streaming feel comfortable without annoying ”buffering”.

Meanwhile, about the controller, both of them are equally equipped with similar remote called “LG Magic Remote” where it has a lot of advanced features that allows you easier to control TV functions and navigate Smart TV. One of most useful functions is about “point and click” functionality that allows you to operate smart TV like using a mouse on Computer. Additionally, it is also equipped with built-in microphone that allows you to control TV functions with your voice.

Color gamut is also very wide that makes color of the picture look very saturated even when displaying HDR. Peak brightness is also quite bright. As long as you don’t use them in an extremely bright room, both of them offer stunning picture quality and great HDR performance, no matter the light condition of the room when used. While picture quality displayed on each of their screen is amazing, both of them also offer similar great motion handling and wide viewing angle. The advantage of LG OLED C7 series is about their HDR ability where it already supports more HDR formats. Additionally, there is also HDR Effect feature behind it that allows you to enjoy normal quality with the quality close to HDR.  The other advantage is about lower input lag that makes it is more comfortable when used for playing video games especially for fast paced games. Additionally, LG OLED C7 series also offers better performance than OLED B6 when displaying 24p movies. But even so, because most of people don’t notice about judder, this actually is not too major. Meanwhile, the advantage of LG OLED B6 is about its sound quality where it offers more impressive sound quality than OLED C7. Nevertheless, it doesn’t support Dolby Atmos while OLED C7 already supports Dolby Atmos.

So which is a better choice between them? You need to know, at this time when I was writing this comparison, LG OLED C7 is sold far more expensive than OLED B6, whether it is for 55 inch and 65 Inch. If your main consideration is about picture quality, I think OLED B6 is a better choice considering it is sold far cheaper but offers similar picture quality. Nevertheless, if you want newer model and addition of several features like web have discussion a lot above, and you don’t care to spend hundreds even thousand dollars more, OLED C7 series might be a good option for you. But of course, the price that offered is not fixed and could still change at any time. Now, the decision comes back to you according to your preferences and budgets. However, before you decide to choose one of them, there are a lot of opinions from the people who have purchased one of them where you can make as your further consideration.
