Because screens sizes that available on them are 49 Inch, 55 Inch, and 65 Inch, of course this comparison is as true to these sizes (UN49MU8000 vs UN49KS8000), (UN55MU8000 vs UN55KS8000), and (UN65MU8000 vs UN65KS8000). If we see their series number, this confirms MU8000 is a successor of KS8000. Of course this indicates that performance of MU8000 should be better than KS8000 or at least is similar. Is that right? Let’s start to discuss side by side the difference between Samsung KS8000 and MU8000.
Short Review of Samsung KS8000
As we have mentioned above, Samsung KS8000 is actually a 2016. Since there is already a successor MU8000, as soon as possible, it will be discontinued by the manufacturer. But as long as it is still available in, this can be taken as the good option for you who are searching a mid-class TV with great picture quality but with an affordable price since the price of each screen has dropped significantly if compared to its price when they are first released.
Come with HDR technology, Samsung KS8000 is included a few TV models released in 2016 that certified by Ultra HD premium Certification. This means it can display HDR 10 fully like what intended. Combination of strong contrast, bright luminance, wide color gamut and smooth color gradient makes the picture displayed on its screen looks really amazing for its class, no matter the light condition of a room where it is used. In a dark room, black looks really darks that makes detail of images in dark scenes still looks clearly and natural. On the other hand, peak luminance produced by Samsung KS8000 is also bright enough to fight the glare in a bright room that makes details of images still looks clearly even in a sun highlighted effect. The only drawback of KS800 on its picture quality is about its poor side viewing angle. Nevertheless, as long as you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, this actually is also not a big problem for you.
In addition amazing picture quality in SDR or HDR, Samsung KS8000 is also a good performer when handling the motion blur. It might not be as the best in class, but at least the picture produced looks very smooth with less motion blur noticeable when it is used for watching fast moving images like sport program or fast movies. The other advantage is about the input lag where KS8000 series is included TVs with lowest input lag. Of course this makes it is very comfortable when used for playing any kind of games, even for fast paced games. And as its smart TV platform, Samsung KS8000 comes with Tizen OS as its smart TV platform where it is included one of the best Smart TV platforms in 2016.
Short Review of Samsung MU8000
Come as a successor of KS8000, Samsung MU8000 precisely loses of some main technologies of KS8000 and one of them is Quantum Dot Panel. Without quantum dot panel behind it, this certainly makes color performance of MU8000 is not as great as the predecessor KS8000. But fortunately, with 4K Color Drive technology as the instead of QD panel, it still produce wide color gamut that makes the color produced by MU8000 still looks very accurate. In addition to accurate color, Samsung MU8000 also has deep black level and strong contrast that makes its dark room performance is great. Like the predecessor KS8000, blacks of images looks very dark in the screen of MU8000 that makes dark scenes look very detail and realistic. But unfortunately, peak brightness of Samsung MU8000 is still below 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation for HDR 10 and not as bright as what produced by KS8000. In a dark room or a bright room with normal light condition, peak brightness reached by MU8000 might bright enough to make its HDR performance is good. But in an extremely bright room, it is still not quite bright to fight the glare. The other drawback, Samsung MU8000 has poor side viewing angle since it use VA panel.
Meanwhile, Samsung MU8000 is also a good TV when used for watching sports or other fast moving images. Its pixel response time is very low even lower than KS8000. The result, the picture produced looks smoothly and clearly and there is only a short trail behind fast moving objects that should not be disturbing. Go ahead the great performance of the predecessor, Samsung MU8000 do a great job when up-scaling lower resolution to near 4K quality. This allows you to enjoy video contents with any resolution with the quality close to 4K quality. Like the predecessor, the input lag of MU8000 is very low under game mode. This course makes play games on MU8000 feel comfort and responsive. And as its smart TV platform, Samsung MU8000 feature newer version of Tizen OS where there are some upgrades and updates that makes it is more attractive and its performance is better than older version.

Performance of Samsung KS8000 vs MU8000
As we see on comparison table above, there are some differences in technologies behind Samsung MU8000 and KS8000 that makes picture quality produced by them is also different. One of the major differences between them is about color technology behind them where Samsung KS8000 comes with Quantum Dot panel while MU8000 comes with 4K Color Drive Extreme. This certainly makes color performance of Samsung MU8000 is not as great as KS8000. Nevertheless, although not as good as the predecessor, MU8000 still support wide color gamut where it still can deliver more than 90% of DCI P3 color space as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 video fully. This makes the color of the picture displayed on the screen of MU8000 still looks saturated and accurate. Meanwhile, since it can deliver wider color gamut than MU8000, of course this makes the color of the picture displayed on the screen of Samsung KS8000 looks more saturated and more accurate. No matter it is displaying SDR or HDR video, the color displayed accurately that makes picture produced looks more realistic and natural. On the other hand, both of Samsung MU8000 and KS8000 equally has the ability to process well 10 bit depth of color. This means both of them can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color that makes their color gradient looks very smooth. There might still some imperfections on darker color, but it this should not be a major problem for most people.
About contrast and black level produced by them, Samsung KS8000 also has deeper black level and stronger contrast than MU8000. But even so, despite it is not as deep and strong as KS8000, Black level and Contrast of Samsung MU8000 still very dark and strong. With around 0.02 nits of black level and 4700:1 native contrast ratio, this is quite dark and strong to makes dark room performance of MU8000 is good. It is also quite dark to display HDR 10 contents that need 0.05 nits or lower of black level. On the other hand, since black level and contrast are including the most important aspects of picture quality, with deeper black level and stronger contrast or around 7000:1 of contrast ratio, this course makes picture quality produced by KS8000 looks a bit better than MU8000, particularly when used in a dark room. Black of images in dark scenes will be revealed more on the screen of that makes detail of images in dark scenes looks clearer on the screen of KS8000 than MU8000.
Additionally, peak luminance reached by Samsung KS8000 is also far brighter than what reached by MU8000. KS8000 is able to reach about 1400 nits of peak brightness while peak brightness reached by MU8000 is only about 600 nits. This course makes the picture displayed on the screen of KS8000 looks more consistent amazing than MU8000 when they are used in an extremely bright room with a lot of lights coming through the windows. On the other hand, for displaying HDR 10 video fully, peak brightness needed is at last 1000 nits. This means what reached by KS8000 exceeds than this minimum recommendation and makes its HDR performance is great. Otherwise, since its peak luminance is still below 1000 nits, of course MU8000 is not able to display HDR 10 video fully. But even so, what reached by MU8000 is still bright enough to fight the glare when used in a moderately room. It is also bright enough to makes its HDR performance is good in a dark room or moderately room.
Meanwhile, for anticipating the scarcity of 4K contents that available in the market, both of Samsung KS8000 and MU8000 are equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling Engine. This allows you to enjoy lower resolution contents with the quality close to 4K resolution. No matter the resolution of your source, whether it is 1080p, 720p, or even 480p videos, all of them up-scaled well to near 4K quality. The result, the final images in 4K that produced looks very clear and sharp. Even low resolution 480p videos like DVDs movies still looks sharply and clearly with small details still preserved well on each of their screen.
But like other TVS with VA panel, poor side viewing angle becomes a major drawback of both. Started at 20 degrees off center and front, black will looks tend to grey and the color accuracy will be reduced that makes that of course makes the picture quality is degraded. And the wider viewing angle you are watching from, the picture will look worse. But even so, as long as you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, this should not be a problem for you.
Motion Handling and 24p Play Back
While picture quality of Samsung MU8000 is not as good as the predecessor KS8000, on the other hand, it offers better motion handling. The pixel response time of MU8000 is lower that makes the picture displayed is smoother than KS8000 when they are displaying fast moving images like sports program or fast movies. On the screen of MU800, there is only a short trail following fast moving objects that is not too noticeable while on the screen of KS8000, a trail following fast moving object is more noticeable. But even so, although not as good as what offered by MU8000, motion handling of KS8000 is still above average and can be said good. Meanwhile, when playing 24p movies, both of Samsung MU8000 and KS8000 equally do a great job, regardless the source. No matter the source is 24p video like Blu Ray Movies, 24p via 60i signals like movies from Satellite TV or even 24p via 60p signal like movies from Streaming media, all of them displayed clearly and smoothly with judder-free on each of their screen.
As their inputs/outputs, both of Samsung MU8000 and KS8000 are equipped with identical connectivity. There are 4 HDMI Ports, 3 USB Ports, 1 RF In (Terrestrial), Ethernet, and Digital Audio Out (Optical). There are no Composite In (AV In) and Component In behind them, so if you want to connect other devices where these ports are as their major connectivity, you need a separated adapter. Unlike other most of TVs that available in the market where their inputs/outputs are located on rear or side panel, most of these ports are located on separated box called “One Connect Box Mini”. This will give some benefits especially when there is an update firmware of their ports where you just need to upgrade or change the box without change the TV. Meanwhile, about the input lag, despite the input lag of MU8000 is a bit lower than KS8000, essentially, their input lag is very low at any sources. This certainly makes they are very comfortable when used for playing any kind of games, even for fast paced games that require fast reflexes.
As their Smart TV platform, both of them equally feature Tizen OS that powered by a quad core processor. The difference is about their version where MU8000 as a newer model features newer version of Tizen OS than KS8000. For this case, a newer version of Tizen OS comes with White Theme and nice animation that makes its layout and user interface is more attractive than older version. But overall, there are not many significant improvements. Navigating on both is still simple and feels easy and comfort. Additionally, the loading time of an app once it is launched or selecting between apps also equally feel responsive. Meanwhile, talking about apps provided, both of them also equally provided complete and diverse apps. There are most popular apps like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, and others, Web Browser, Screen Mirroring, Cloud Games Service, Samsung Apps Store, and many more. Additionally, you can also download tons of apps, games, and contents from Samsung Apps Store.
Meanwhile, talking about remote control, both of Samsung KS8000 and MU8000 are also equipped with similar Remote Control. The button is very minimalistic even there is no “Number Button” on their remote. But even so, it is still comfortable to use. The interesting point that offered, it is equipped with built-in microphone for voice search or voice navigation functionality. This remote is also equipped with tons of IR command embedded, so it can be used as universal remote to control other devices which connected on Samsung TV.
|Performance||Samsung KS8000||Samsung MU8000|
As we have discussed a lot above, despite Samsung KS8000 is an older model, but essentially it offers better picture quality than MU8000 due it has deeper black level, more color gamut coverage, and brighter peak brightness. KS8000 series even comes with Ultra HD Premium Certification set by UHD alliance that ensure it can display HDR 10 video fully like what intended. While Samsung MU8000 is not certified with Ultra HD Premium certification due some its display specs don’t meet the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance. Nevertheless, despite not as good as what offered by KS8000, picture quality displayed on the screen of MU8000 still looks good due it is able to produce deep black level, wide color gamut, and bright peak luminance. While Samsung KS8000 is superior on picture quality, Samsung MU8000 as a newer model offers better performance in motion handling that course makes you more comfort when enjoying fast moving images like sport or fast movies. Additionally, the input lag if MU8000 is also a bit lower than KS8000 that also makes it is a bit more comfortable when used for playing any kind of games, especially for fast paced games. In addition to what mentioned, essentially, both of Samsung KS8000 and MU8000 offers similar performance.
So, which is a better choice between them? You need to know, although refer to the price when they are first released Samsung KS8000 is sold hundreds dollar more expensive than MU8000, but when I was writing this comparison, the price of KS8000 has dropped and for this now, it is sold hundreds dollar cheaper than MU8000. Considering performance and price that offered, I think KS8000 is a better choice. But unfortunately, because it is 2016 model and as possible as it certainly will be discontinued by the manufacturer, if you want to get it, you should buy it immediately. But even so, if you want a newer model, Samsung MU8000 is also not a bad choice for you. Although picture quality produced is not as good as KS8000, its picture quality is still amazing for its class. But even so, because its price is still expensive, wait its price drops a bit might be better. Now the decision comes back to you according to your preferences. But before you decide to choose one of them, there are a lot of opinions from each of their real customers where you can make as your further consideration.
