by on July 15, 2017

LG OLED C7P is a part of LG’s 2017 4K HDR OLED TV while Samsung Q9F is the top model of Samsung’s 2017 4K HDR QLED TV. In the market place, there are 2 screen sizes available for OLED C7P including 55 Inch (OLED55C7P) and 65 Inch (OLED65C7P), while for Q9F, there are also 2 screen sizes available, 65 Inch (QN65Q9F) and 75 Inch (QN75Q9F). Since the screen size available on both is 65 inch, this comparison certainly is as true to this size (QN65Q9F vs 65OLEDC7P). With the same price, in the market, Q9F (QN65Q9F) is sold about hundreds dollar more expensive than OLED C7P (OLED65C7P). But because both of them are sold about $4000, their difference price certainly is not too significant. Nevertheless, their prices certainly are not fixed and could still change at any time. So, what features offered by each and which one is a better choice between them?

Short Review of LG OLED C7P (OLED55C7P, OLED65C7P)

LG OLED C7P Review

LG OLED C7P is a successor of OLED C6P series in 2016. But unlike the predecessor that comes with curved panel and 3D technology, OLED C7P comes with flat panel and is not equipped with 3D technology. See the specs and features which offered, it precisely is more similar to OLED B6P series in 2016. Like other model of 4K TVs released in 2017, LG OLED C7P is also still focused on HDR. With Active HDR engine behind it, C7P already supports most of HDR formats which available in the market including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and Advanced HDR. Even not only that, with “HDR Effect” feature, it has an ability to improve the brightness and color range of SDR images, so you can enjoy them with the quality close to 4K HDR quality.

One of the advantages of LG OLED C7p is about its perfect black level, infinite contrast ratio, and excellent black uniformity, makes the dark scenes of images looks outstanding, even when set in a dark room. As we know, OLED TVs including OLED C7P have self-lighting pixel that means each of pixel can switch on/off/dim individually without affected by the condition of other pixel surrounding. This certainly makes it doesn’t require backlight technology. Additionally, since it doesn’t have backlighting technology, this also makes OLED C7P can cover nearly perfect side viewing angle coverage, even far better than LED TV with IPS panel. This means, when you are watching TV from an angle, the picture displayed will look as good as when you are watching from center and in front of the screen. Meanwhile for delivering wide color gamut, LG OLED C7P uses 4 sub-pixels technology (RGBW) and maximized by Tru Color Accuracy, makes the color of the picture displayed on its screen looks very accurate.

LG OLED C7P is a great TV when used for watching fast paced videos like sports program or fast movies due its pixel response time is extremely low, even it is lower than LED TV with the lowest pixel response time. The result, the picture displayed look very smooth and clear with almost no motion blur noticeable. Additionally, due its great ability to remove the judder from any source, OLD C7P is also great TV when used for watching 24p videos. Although not as low as High-end Sony TVs, the input lag of OLED C7P is also low, low enough to make playing any kind of games feel responsively without laggy. And for completing your high quality home entertainment, it features WebOS 3.5 as its smart TV platform which offers simple, responsive, and attractive smart TV experience with a lot of useful and interesting apps available.

Short Review of Samsung Q9F (QN65Q9F, QN75Q9F)

Samsung Q9F Review

Samsung Q9F is the flagship of Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV. Like other models of Samsung QLED TV 2017, the advanced Quantum dot technology is the major technology of Q9F, makes it can cover nearly perfect of DCI P3 color space coverage. This makes Q9F has outstanding rendition of colors, even can be said the best TV in 2017 in term of rendition of color. Like OLED C7P, Samsung Q9F also still focuses on HDR by the support of Q 4K HDR Elite+ with Infinity Array as its HDR processor. But unlike C7P that already support most of HDR formats, Q9F only supports HDR 10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma). Nevertheless, although only supporting these formats, HDR performance of Q9F is great due all of display specs delivered meet the minimum recommendation set by UHD alliance for displaying HDR 10 videos like what intended.

Although not as strong as what offered by OLED C7P, the native contrast ratio and black uniformity of Samsung Q9F is fairly strong and good, result in deep blacks. This is dark enough to makes dark scene looks excellently when set in a dark room. Behind it, there is Edge Lit backlight with local dimming technology called “Precision Black Ultimate”, Q Elite Black+ with Infinite Array, and Contrast Enhancer technology which designed for improving black level and contrast of Q9F. Meanwhile, for maximizing bright scenes looks excellently, even when set in an extremely bright room, Samsung Q9F is powered by Ultra Luminance technology that improves the peak brightness and Ultra Clear Panel technology that designed for reducing reflection and minimizing the glare. But unlike OLED C7P that offers excellent picture quality from any angle, the side viewing angle coverage of Q9F is poor. This means when you are watching TV from side viewing angle, the picture displayed doesn’t look as good as when you are watching TV from center and in front of the screen.

Additionally, although not as low as what offered by LG C7P, the pixel response time of Samsung Q9F is also very low for LED TV, result in smooth and clear picture quality with almost no motion blur when used for watching sport program or other fast paced movies. Q9F is also a great TV when used for watching 24p movies due its great ability to remove the judder at any source.  Additionally, it also has low input lag, similar to OLED C7, makes it is also very comfortable when used for playing any kind of games, even for fast paved games. And as its smart TV platform, it features Tizen OS where it is not less attractive and responsive than WebOS 3.5 of OLED C7P.

Samsung Q9F vs LG OLED C7P Performance

Picture Quality

Essentially, both of Samsung Q9F and LGF OLED C7P equally offer excellent picture quality and great HDR performance. If OLED C7P is including TVs with the best native contrast ratio, Q9F is including TVs with the best rendition of colors. This certainly makes each of them is as a good TV for you who are searching premium TV which offer absolutely stunning picture quality.

As we have mentioned above, LG OLED C7P has infinite native contrast ratio and excellent black uniformity, makes black looks nicely in a dark room. This certainly makes dark scene of images looks excellently with details of images in shadow looks very clear. Since OLED C7P already support HDR, this also help to make dark scenes of HDR images displayed looks like what intended by HDR technology itself. Additionally, perfect black of OLED C7 also makes the dark scenes of images looks naturally. This certainly makes OLED C7P is including the best TVs when used in a dark room. On the other hand, although contrast ratio and black uniformity of Samsung Q9F is not as high and good as OLED C7P, but for LED TV, contrast ratio and black uniformity of Q9F can be said fairly well. This is also strong enough to make black looks black in dark room. Although it is not excellent as OLED C7P, but darks scenes of Samsung Q9F still can be said excellent. Black level of Q9F is also quite dark to reveal details of HDR images so looks very details like what recommended by UHD alliance as the originator of HDR 10 format.  Essentially, both of them meet the minimum specs for displaying Dark scene of HDR 10 videos set by UHD alliance. As we know, UHD Alliance has set different recommendation for LED TV and OLED TV. For OLED TV, the standardization is 0.005 nits or darker while for LED TV, the standardization is 0.05 nits or darker.

While both of them are able to display excellent dark scenes, bright scenes of images displayed on their screen also looks excellently, no matter the light condition of the room, where they are used. With about 1400 nits of black level, bright scenes of images displayed on the screen of Samsung Q9F looks very bright. It is also bright enough to fight the glare when set in a bright room with a lot of light surrounding. Additionally, peak brightness reached by Q9F is also bright enough to show highlight of HDR images at 1000 – 4000 nits like what have set by UHD alliance for displaying HDR 10 videos fully. On the other hand, although not as bright as Q9F, peak brightness of OLED C7P also can be said very bright for OLED TV. It is quite bright to fight the glare and makes the picture produced by OLED C7P looks consistently well when set in a bright room. Additionally, with about 730 nits of peak brightness, it is bright enough to shows the highlights of HDR images brighter than 550 nits like what intended. Like for black level, UHD alliance also set different standardization of peak brightness for OLED TV and LED TV. For displaying HDR 10 videos fully, an OLED TV must get at least 550 nits of peak brightness, while LED TV must get at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. While peak luminance reached by both of OLED C7P and Q9F is brighter than these minimum recommendations.

Talking about their color reproduction, although Samsung Q9F has a bit wider color gamut than LG OLED C7P, but essentially, both of them have excellent wide color gamut. They are able to accurately show almost all colors in DCI P3 color space of HDR images. Even for deep green where most of TVs has a problem to accurately show it, both of them can show this color fairly saturated. This certainly makes the accuracy of colors of the picture displayed on their screen looks excellently, colors of HDR images even also can be represented excellently. Additionally, Samsung Q9F also offers a bit better color volume than OLED C7P. For OLED C7P, its color gamut will slightly narrow at extremely bright colors, while for Q9F, its color gamut will slightly narrows at extremely dark colors. But essentially, their color volume is fairly good and both of them are able to maintain its wide color gamut at entire brightness range. Meanwhile, talking about their color gradient, both of them already support 10 bits depth of color that means both of them are able to deliver more than 1.07 billion shades of color. The result, color gradient of picture displayed on their screen looks very smooth without any major color banding. Although some small imperfections might still be noticeable at dark shades of color, but overall, their color gradient is fairly good.

Meanwhile, for anticipating the many of lower resolution contents which available in the market, both of Samsung Q9F and LG OLED C7P are equally equipped with great UHD Up-scaling engine. This allows you to enjoy video contents with any resolution with the quality close to 4K quality. No matter the resolution of your source, even low resolution videos like DVDs with 480p resolution, the final image in 4K quality produced still looks sharply and clearly. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources like movies from TV cable with 720p resolution or Blu Ray Movies with 1080p resolution, the final images in 4K that produced certainly will looks sharper and clearer with small details preserved well. Even not only that, with “HDR Effect” feature behind OLED C7P, it can improve the brightness range of SDR images, so you can enjoy them with the quality close to 4K HDR on the screen of OLED C7P.

In addition to its infinitive contrast ratio, the major advantage of LG OLED C7P than Samsung Q9F is about their side viewing angle coverage. Since it doesn’t have backlighting, OLED C7P has nearly perfect side viewing angle. This means no matter an angle you are watching from, the images quality will look as good as when you are watching from center and front. Meanwhile, for Samsung Q9F, started at 20 degrees off center and front, black will look tend to grey and color will shift. This certainly makes the picture displayed doesn’t look as good as when you are watching from center and in front of the screen.

Winner: LG OLED C7P is winner on contrast ratio, black uniformity, and side viewing angle coverage while Samsung Q9F is winner on rendition of colors and peak luminance

Motion Handling and 24p Playback

Both of Samsung Q9F and LG OLED C7P have great motion handling. When used for watching fast paced videos like sports program or fast movies, the picture displayed looks smoothly and clearly with virtually no motion blur noticeable. Nevertheless, compare between them, although the pixel response time of Q9F itself is already extremely low for LED TV, but the pixel response time of OLED C7P is far lower. The result, on the screen OLED C7P, there is almost no trail visible following fast moving objects, while on the screen of Q9F, there is still a short trail following fast moving object.  Nevertheless, for LED TV, performance of Q9F is fairly excellent, even most of people might not notice about motion blur on the screen Q9F.  Meanwhile, when playing 24p movies, both of them also equally do a perfect job. No matter the movies sources, whether it is native 24p videos like movies from Blu-Ray player, 24p videos via 60i signal like movies from satellite TV or even 24p videos like movies from streaming device, all of them are displayed clearly and smoothly without judder visible. Nevertheless, to remove judder without adding “soap opera effect”, a certain setting is required. For Samsung Q9F, “Auto Motion Plus” on picture setting must be set to “Custom” and both “Blur Reduction” and “Judder Reduction” must be set to “0”. While for OLED C7P, the “Real Cinema” option must be turned on,  the “Tru Motion” option must be set to ”User” and both the ”De-Blur” and the “De-Judder” also must be set “0”).

Winner:  LG OLED C7P

Inputs/Outputs

Both of LG OLED C7P and Samsung Q9F are equally equipped with 4 HDMI ports (HDCP 2.2) and 3 USB ports as their major connectivity. Additionally, they are also equally equipped with 1 RF In (Antenna In), 1 Ethernet In, and Digital Audio Out (Optical). Nevertheless, both of them are not equally equipped with Component In.  A bit difference between them is about Component In (AV In) where OLED C7P is equipped with 1 AV In while Q9F is not equipped with this input. The other difference is about where these inputs/outputs are located. On OLED C7P, all of these inputs/outputs ports are located on it’s the side and rear panel, while for Samsung Q9F, most of their inputs/outputs ports are located on separated box called “One Connect Box”. Meanwhile, talking about their input lags, both of them have similar low input lags at any sources under “Game Mode” and “PC Mode”. With about 21 ms of input lags at any sources, this certainly is low enough to make playing any kind of games feel responsively without laggy, even for fast paced games which require fast reflexes.

Winner: Tie

Smart TV

Tizen OS vs WebOS

Both of these Premium 4K HDR TVs equally feature attractive and responsive smart TV platform. Samsung Q9F comes with Tizen OS 2017 while LG OLED C7P comes with WebOS 3.5. Both of these platforms equally have attractive user layout design. To make simpler when navigation, on the home screen of Tizen OS, there is a “ribbon” at the bottom of screen contain quick access to a lot of most popular apps. For the same functionality, there is also Strip Bar across the bottom of the screen on the “home screen” of WebOS. This allows you to launch some popular apps without leaving the home screen. Meanwhile, its performance is also equally fast and responsive. Once you launch an app, the loading in time is very quick. The displacement between apps when multitasking also feels very responsively on both. Additionally, talking about apps available, both of them also equally provide complete and diverse apps. As their preinstalled apps, there are VoD Service like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, HuluPlus, and many more, Web Browser, Games, and many more. Both of them also equally have apps and contents store which provide tons of useful and interesting downloadable apps, contents, and games.

A bit advantage of LG OLED C7P than Samsung Q9F is about their remote control. LG OLED C7P comes with “LG Magic Remote” while Samsung Q9F comes with “Samsung Smart Controller”.  Samsung remote is more simple and fast fewer buttons than LG remote but in other hand, it lacks some quick access button. On the other hand, both of these remote are equally equipped with built in microphone for voice commands and voice search. Additionally, both of them are also can be functioned as an universal remote for controlling other devices connected each of their TV via HDMI Port. The advantage of LG remote is about “point and click” functionality where it has a function like a mouse on PC. This will make inputting the text or surfing on the internet feel easier.
